Speed Boats

Speed boats are generally powered by IC (Internal Combustion) engines or Brushless Motor and LiPo battery combinations. Most faster speedboats use a surface drive propeller mounted on the back of the hull but many can use sub surface drive where the propeller is under the hull.

The club specialist is Mark Brown, a speed enthusiast and prolific builder of fast speed boats. His phone number is 07850 722599 and his email is marklifty@hotmail.com

As a much younger club member Mark has to work :( so we would ask you to respect the phone number and email him with your question and your number first.

Power boats come in all shapes and sizes and offer a great deal of excitement on the water. This is a "mono" or single hull model with a petrol engine. It has surface drive where the propeller emerges from behind the hull and pierces the surface of the water rather than being submerged under the hull.

The drive for this hull is similar to the blue model above but the hull is in two parts, a "cat". This design of power boat should be more stable in a straight line but less agile in the turn.

Modern petrol engines have the advantage of being easier to start and most will offer a "pull start" unit attached to the engine. Mark tends to use a centrifugal clutch so that the engine can be started out of the water and will only engage the prop as engine speed increases when the boat is in the water.

A Huntsman built and run by "Dick The Stig". Very fast and also very stable. Great for a cardio vascular workout on a Sunday morning!! This is the larger version and the club is adopting the smaller version as its club racing boat for 2022. The brushless motor will take up to 6s LiPo but for racing we will use 4s to limit racing accidents.

Full throttle racing, exciting stuff!!

Is it a boat...is it a plane...
