Technical

The first model boat to have been found was buried with its owner in a tomb in ancient Egypt and is estimated to be some 5000 years old. Building model boats has been around for a long time but technology and modern materials have advanced modelling at a rate of knots over the last 30 years.

The first major advance came with the ability to control our models with a transmitter and receiver in the 1950's and 1960's but in the last 25 years not only has technology advanced and become widely available, but its become much less expensive. Now we can build our models using carbon, and power them with brushless motors, electronic speed controllers and high discharge LiPo batteries. For those prepared to venture into the new and exciting world of technology there are some modellers who even design and create their models using 3D printers.

The old skills and materials remain very relevant to modern modelling but you will be able to create a better model if you have some understanding of some of the new technologies and materials that are now available to you. This section is not intended to be a full explanation but to make you aware of what is now available to the average modeller. If you would like to get into modelling and need clarification on how to get started then contact either our members at the lake or the contacts listed on this web site.
